At Stamford Dental Studio, all members of your family can achieve a healthy, beautiful smile through regular preventive care visits to our office. By receiving your checkups and continuing to visit our office for routine preventive care, you will have the ability to stop many oral health related problems from starting or getting worse through the preventive services we have available such as exams, professional cleanings of teeth and screenings for oral cancer as well as educating our patients on ways to take care of their oral health through good oral hygiene, dietary needs and implementation of healthy habits.
What Happens at the First Checkup Visit?
Your first visit to our office will set the stage for your overall oral health and provide us with critical information about your dental interests and needs. We will start by reviewing your medical and dental history and, more importantly, noting all of your dental concerns and any symptoms that you may be experiencing. This first consultation will be followed by a complete clinical examination, including an oral cancer screening, periodontal assessment, and occlusal (bite) evaluation. To allow us to complete a comprehensive oral examination, we will recommend and take diagnostic films as necessary. As we take a closer look at your smile, we will examine your teeth, supporting bone and tissues, and the surrounding areas of your head and neck. We will note any evidence of grinding or clenching your teeth and will evaluate your TMJ (temporomandibular joint) function. A comprehensive oral examination can also identify the effects that certain dietary habits, eating disorders, medications, harmful habits, and poor oral hygiene habits may have on your smile.
We want every patient to experience the joy of a healthy and beautiful smile. At Stamford Dental Studio, you can be assured that your oral examination will be conducted with the utmost care and that every member of our staff is attuned to your needs. Based on the results of your oral examination and the findings on your diagnostic films, we will determine whether any further treatment is required.
A Healthy Smile Supports Your Whole-Body Health
At Stamford Dental Studio, we believe your smile is closely connected to your overall wellness. Problems affecting your teeth and gums don’t just stay in your mouth — they can impact your entire body.
During your exam, we check for common issues like cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. We also look for signs that may point to other health concerns.
Poor oral health has been linked to:
-
Digestive disorders
-
Respiratory problems
-
Cardiovascular disease
-
Stroke
-
Diabetes
-
Alzheimer’s disease
It works both ways. Many health conditions can also show early signs in the mouth. In fact, over 90% of systemic diseases may cause symptoms such as:
-
Dry mouth
-
Bad breath
-
Gum inflammation
-
Mouth sores or lesions
Taking care of your smile is an important step toward protecting your overall health.
The Importance of Routine Checkups and Professional Dental Cleanings
Maintaining a healthy, attractive smile is about more than just brushing and flossing at home. A key part of maintaining your oral health and preventing future problems is receiving routine dental checkups and professional cleanings by your dentist.
A routine dental visit allows your dentist to monitor your teeth and gums, detect problems early, and provide preventive care before they become serious.
It is important not to wait until you begin to feel pain or see something wrong with your teeth and gums to schedule your checkup. By having checkups every six months, you will greatly reduce your chances of developing cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems. Finding oral problems early usually means treatment will be easier and more comfortable.
Even if you provide excellent dental care for yourself at home, plaque and tartar can still build up in areas that are hard for you to reach. A professional cleaning visit can remove this buildup, help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, and leave you with a mouth full of fresh, clean teeth.
A routine dental visit is also a great way to improve the way you provide dental care to yourself at home. Your teeth and gums can be maintained through proper technique in brushing and flossing, and your dentist will be able to give you guidance on how to make recommendations that will help to maintain long-term oral health. Particularly for children, getting regular dental visits can help to encourage the development of good oral health habits, as well as to monitor the child’s growth and development of their teeth and gums.
With a commitment to maintaining regular, consistent preventative care, you can expect your smile to be healthy, strong, and confident for many years to come.
What Do Dental X-Rays Show?
While a thorough visual exam helps us evaluate your smile, the only way to see the deeper structures of your teeth, bone, and surrounding tissues is through dental X-rays (radiographs). These images allow us to detect cavities, infections, bone loss, and other hidden concerns that may not be visible during a regular exam. They also provide valuable information about the development and overall health of your teeth and jaw.
With modern advancements, dental X-rays are now digital. Unlike traditional film-based methods that required longer exposure times and chemical processing, digital radiography uses advanced sensors and software to capture and store images quickly and efficiently.
Benefits of Digital Radiography
-
Faster imaging with minimal radiation exposure
-
Immediate image viewing
-
Easy electronic sharing when needed
-
Environmentally friendly — no chemicals or film waste
-
Secure storage in your electronic dental record for quick access
Digital X-rays help us provide precise, safe, and efficient care while ensuring a more comfortable experience for our patients.
What Are the Different Types of Dental X-Rays?
The type of dental X-rays recommended depends on your specific needs and the reason for your visit. Each type provides important information to help diagnose and plan treatment accurately.
Common Types of Dental X-Rays
Periapical X-ray
Shows a complete view of a single tooth — from the crown to the root and surrounding bone. It helps detect infections, root problems, or bone loss.
Bitewing X-ray
Captures detailed images of the upper and lower back teeth. It is commonly used to detect cavities between teeth and monitor bone levels.
Full Mouth Series
A complete set of bitewing and periapical X-rays that provide detailed images of all teeth and supporting structures.
Panoramic X-ray (Panorex)
Provides a broad 2D image of the entire mouth, including all teeth and both jaws. It helps evaluate impacted teeth, jaw health, and overall dental development.
Cephalometric X-ray
A side-profile image of the face and jaws, often used in orthodontic planning to assess jaw growth and alignment.
3D Imaging with CBCT
Modern dentistry also uses Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) to capture detailed 3D images of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. This advanced technology is especially useful for diagnosis, surgical planning, and precise dental implant placement.
