Post-Operative Instructions: Dental Implants
We aim at Stamford Dental Studio to have you recover from the procedure in a safe and easy way, without complications. After having the surgery for implants done, you should pay close attention to how to care for yourself properly in order for the implant to heal well.
A blood clot will form around the implant site immediately after surgery. Protecting this clot is critical, as it allows your body to begin the healing process and helps the implant integrate with your jawbone.
FIRST 48 HOURS – CRITICAL HEALING PERIOD
During the initial two days after the operation, you should try to do nothing that might interfere with the surgery area.
DO NOT:
- Rinse your mouth vigorously
- Spit forcefully
- Use drinking straws
- Smoke or use tobacco products
- Touch the area with your tongue or fingers
Interfering with the blood clot might slow down the healing process and cause complications such as failure of the implant.
BLEEDING
It is normal to experience mild bleeding or oozing for up to 24 hours following surgery.
To control bleeding:
- Bite firmly on gauze for 30–60 minutes immediately after the procedure
- Replace gauze every 30–45 minutes as needed
- Keep your head elevated while resting or sleeping
- Avoid bending over or strenuous activity
If bleeding continues beyond 24 hours or becomes heavy, please contact our office.
SWELLING
Swelling is a natural part of the healing process and typically peaks within 48–72 hours after surgery.
To reduce swelling:
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face (20 minutes on / 20 minutes off) during the first 24 hours
- After 24 hours, warm compresses may be used if needed
- Sleep with your head elevated
Mild bruising may also occur and should resolve within several days.
PAIN & DISCOMFORT
Once the anesthesia wears off, some level of discomfort is expected.
Pain management guidelines:
- Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed
- Do not skip doses during the first 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol while taking medications
- Do not drive or operate machinery if you are taking prescription pain medication
Discomfort should gradually improve each day. If pain worsens instead of improving, contact our office.
INFECTION PREVENTION
Infections are uncommon but can occur if proper care is not followed.
To minimize risk:
- Take all prescribed antibiotics until completed
- Avoid smoking, as it significantly increases the risk of implant failure
- Maintain a clean oral environment
Important for patients taking birth control pills:
Certain antibiotics may temporarily reduce effectiveness. Please use an alternative method of contraception during this time.
SUTURES (STITCHES)
Sutures may be placed to support healing.
- Dissolvable sutures typically fall out within 5–10 days
- Non-dissolvable sutures will be removed during a follow-up visit (usually within 7–14 days)
ORAL HYGIENE
Keeping your mouth clean is essential, but care must be taken around the surgical site.
- Do not brush the surgical area for the first 24 hours
- Resume gentle brushing the following day
- Avoid direct contact with the implant site initially
- Begin warm salt water rinses after 24 hours (2–3 times daily)
DIET INSTRUCTIONS
Proper nutrition supports healing and reduces complications.
First 24 Hours:
- Stick to cool liquids (water, apple juice, smoothies)
Days 2–5:
- Soft foods such as:
- Yogurt
- Mashed potatoes
- Scrambled eggs
- Pasta
For at least 1–2 weeks, AVOID:
- Hard or crunchy foods
- Sticky foods
- Nuts, seeds, popcorn, or chips
- Hot foods during the first 24 hours
Chew on the opposite side of your mouth whenever possible.
ACTIVITY RESTRICTIONS
Physical activity can increase bleeding and disrupt healing.
- Rest for the first 24 hours
- Avoid exercise, heavy lifting, or strenuous activity for at least 5 days
- Gradually return to normal activity as tolerated
HEALING PROCESS & TIMELINE
Dental implants heal in stages:
- Days 1–3: Swelling and mild discomfort
- Week 1: Gum tissue begins to heal
- 1–3 Months: Implant integrates with bone (osseointegration)
- Final Step: Crown placement restores full function and appearance
Following instructions carefully during this period is essential for long-term success.
