After receiving a dental filling, your bite will be somewhat altered. The sensation in your mouth will need time to get used to the alteration in tooth position or structure, and this will take a few days.

Post-Procedure Tips

  • If your bite feels uneven or if high spots are present, do not hesitate to contact us. We can take care of that in no time.
  • It is quite natural to experience sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages immediately after your tooth filling treatment. In most cases, sensitivity resolves in a few days.
  • Gum soreness near the treated tooth is another possible outcome. Rinsing your mouth with lukewarm salt water (½ tsp salt in a cup of lukewarm water) will help reduce irritation and support healing.
  • If you have been given local anesthesia, refrain from consuming hot food or beverages until the numbness subsides.
  • Do not try to chew on the side where your mouth is numb.

Reasons for Discomfort

  • You may observe some degree of swelling or bruising around the injection site, like that caused by a mild bruise. This will subside on its own in a few days.
  • Pain can be controlled with OTC anti-inflammatory medicines, such as ibuprofen and naproxen.
  • You may experience some jaw pain because your mouth was kept open throughout the procedure. In case of need:
    • Avoid wide opening or tough foods
    • Apply an ice pack or warm compress
    • Take an anti-inflammatory if necessary
  • Increased salivation is common after receiving a tooth filling and will return to normal within approximately a week.

If discomfort persists, worsens, or becomes severe, please contact our office.

Taking Care of Your Dental Work

  • Maintain your pearly whites with consistent brushing and flossing to keep your teeth clean and safeguard your filling.
  • Indulge yourself by visiting the dentist regularly for check-ups and cleaning, as it will help maintain the overall health of your mouth and keep your fillings in excellent condition.
  • Avoid biting hard and sticky foods like ice, hard candies, nuts, caramel, and frozen foods, as this can damage your fillings.
  • Use your teeth for smiling rather than for unwrapping packages or chewing on pens and pencils.
  • Avoid food and drinks that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and berries. Using a straw while drinking these liquids and brushing afterward will prevent stains on your teeth.
